Challenge … Change … Progress
"Dealing with the Tsunami of Demographic Change"
The upcoming decade will see a fundamental shift in the employer-employee relationship as organizations seek to attract and retain good employees in a declining labour market. This labour force shortage will arise as the massive baby boomer generation retires and companies compete to hire the small pool of "baby - bust" employees. Few organizations are ready for the seismic shift in the workforce that they will face over the next several decades. In a knowledge economy where people are the largest and fastest growing expense within most companies this can be a costly mistake.
Executives, talent managers and human resource professionals who want to compete and win the "war for talent" have to face these workforce changes with open eyes and innovative strategies. To survive companies must transform their management and human resource practices to attract, retain and engage workers of all ages. Business leaders cannot change demographic forces - they can, however, take action to ensure that their organizations have the skilled and committed workers needed for business success. This talk provides of how companies can respond and perhaps even gain from the changing nature of the workforce.
This talk outlines the inexorable demographic trends that are taking us into workforce territory few business leaders understand and provides practical examples and suggestions on how leaders need to change how they manage in order to navigate the difficult terrain ahead. Winning the "war for talent" is about much more than HR and recruitment. It is about recognizing the strategic importance of your human capital because of the enormous value that better talent creates. It is about innovative recruitment, retention and succession planning practices. It is about a nurturing an organizational culture that concretely supports work-life balance and career development.
